Expert Reviews

Expert reviews:

The European small SUV segment has exploded in the last few years, and Toyota has launched the C-HR to steal more sales from its rivals. It's designed the new C-HR with Europe in mind, which is why Toyota has taken a radical new styling direction compared to its worthy other offerings.

The name C-HR stands for Coupe-High Rider, and the styling suits the name, with rakish lines more in-keeping with models like the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe than conventional crossovers.

Under the skin the C-HR uses the Toyota New Global Architecture. This also underpins the current Prius hybrid and helps deliver composed handling and a comfortable ride. The choice of a punchy turbo petrol or frugal hybrid means everyone is catered for, but the former is definitely more fun to drive.

Crucially for this image conscious class, Toyota has worked hard to deliver a distinctive interior. There are plenty of high-grade materials, and a decent tally of kit, while the layout is good and features plenty of bright colours.

• Best crossovers on sale right now

Externally, the C-HR is similar in size to a Nissan Qashqai, which means you get a decent sized boot and reasonable head and legroom. The small back windows do make the rear claustrophobic, however.

Pro:
Head-turning looks, smart cabin, great ride and handling

Cons:
Thrashy hybrid power delivery, claustrophobic rear seats, no diesel

There's no doubt about it, the C-HR is a very welcome addition to the small crossover class. The looks will polarise, the infotainment is average and the engine is eager but needs a little extra poke, yet the well-equipped, edgy and comfortable Toyota brings a lot to the table we like.
Toyota has taken its time producing a proper rival to the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3, but the new C-HR delivers the goods
............

Indeed, the only thing that that will save Mazda, Honda and others from sweating bullets over potential lost sales are the supply restrictions that are keeping Toyota Australia's order books to 6000 units for all of 2017.

Do what we'd do and buy the base car, choose some nicer alloys, and save a few grand.

Pro:
Genuinely interesting design
Standard equipment levels
Balanced new chassis
Good refinement and comfort
Improved service intervals

Cons:
Small infotainment screen
No CarPlay/Android Auto
Engine acceptable, but nothing more
Koba spec a little expensive
Short supply spells waiting list

Wow, you won’t mistake the Toyota C-HR for anything else.

Nope. When we first saw it at motor shows, the C-HR made a big impression. Now we have reviewed it on the road, we can say this small Toyota crossover sure keeps its impact among traffic.

Actually it’s not as small as you might think. It might look like a Juke rival in photos, but it’s more the size of a Qashqai. But it’s not a family car, because interior space is compromised by the eye-socking looks. So you end up with something that could sit on the same shopping list as a Fiat 500X or the new Audi Q2.

I’m guessing it’s a coupe version of the RAV4 then?

No way. The RAV4 is bigger again. But the main thing is, the C-HR is mechanically all-new.

It's no secret that Americans don't buy hatchbacks and station wagons en masse anymore. But the last two decades have revealed that people really like them if they ride a bit higher, have optional all-wheel drive and look more like an SUV — i.e., a crossover. The outrageously successful Toyota RAV4 is a prime example, and now Toyota is hoping you'll have a similar affinity toward the all-new 2018 Toyota C-HR.

The C-HR is smaller and more affordable than the RAV4. In fact, it was originally developed for Toyota's now-defunct Scion brand, which largely explains the C-HR's flamboyant styling and sporty handling. These two key attributes, along with the extensive list of standard safety features, are the main reasons to consider the C-HR in our opinion.

pros

Sporty handling makes it fun to zip around turns
Comes standard with plenty of features, including advanced safety
Swoopy styling helps it stand out

cons

Unlike on most rivals, all-wheel drive isn't available
Can seem slow when accelerating to highway speeds
Navigation, satellite radio and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto not offered

The 2017 BMW X6 M is about two things: style and performance. It has an abundance of both, but don't expect to get practicality, too.
The 2017 BMW X6 M returns with an updated iDrive system that includes touchscreen functionality. The Executive option package also now includes a Wi-Fi hot spot and wireless charging for compatible cellphones.

Pros
Stellar acceleration from turbocharged V8
Exceptional handling and stability for a heavy SUV
Strong braking performance
Wonderfully contoured seats hold you in place during hard cornering.

Cons
Firm ride even with suspension in its softest setting
Small cargo area
Poor rearward visibility
Limited rear headroom
Sloping rear roofline makes for challenging entry and exit.

Who could have imagined marrying the tall ride height and all-wheel-drive ability of an SUV with the fastback styling of a sleek coupe would produce a desirable vehicle, but that’s exactly what BMW has done with the 2017 X6 SUV. Once an army of one, the X6 has been cloned by such notables as the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. Frankly we’re somewhat puzzled by the X6’s appeal. It isn’t a very off-road-capable vehicle and comes up short in areas designated for cargo and passengers. The 2017 BMW X6’s size precludes it from being as sporty as an Infiniti QX30 or Lexus NF, and yet despite these many drawbacks, the X6 is remarkably fun to drive and seems to have gained a loyal following.

Pros
If you’re looking for a luxury SUV with unique looks, good handling and a lengthy options list, the 2017 BMW X6 SUV might appeal to you. It doesn’t come cheap, but then again what BMW does?

Cons
If you need any part of the “utility” in Sport-Utility Vehicle, the 2017 BMW X6’s tiny cargo area, sharply slanted rear hatch and small rear seat probably won’t impress you. An X5 gives you similar performance as the X6 within a far more usable package.

The biggest demerit to the X6 M comes in its ride quality, which ranges from firm to unacceptably, jarringly firm, depending on how its air suspension is adjusted. On roads that are less than perfect, the head toss gets to be enough that wearing a helmet as protection against the suede headliner seems like a not-terrible idea. And then you’d be ready for the track, which is where the X6 M best acquits itself. Not that we imagine actually spotting any at track days.
With a $103,050 base price, the X6 M’s window sticker is as extravagant as its test sheet. Save the snarky jokes about this being a “German Aztek”—they weren’t all that funny when the first X6 showed up nearly a decade ago. And today, when the automotive world has gone all-in on both horsepower and crossovers, what can we expect but things like the X6 M? This sort of automotive indulgence has never made much sense, but that’s exactly the point.
